Graduate School Overview

Since 1951 Eastern Illinois University (EIU) has been committed to advancing the professional and personal lives of their students by providing graduate degree programs and graduate courses to support rigorous study and professional development. Graduate study at EIU offers students a favorable faculty-to-student ratio in the 26 master's and specialist's programs and five certificate programs. Currently more than 1,800 part-time and full-time graduate students are enrolled and more than 300 faculty hold graduate faculty status.

Highlights

Graduate programs achieving the distinction of "First Choice" have applied and been subjected to rigorous review from EIU's Council on Graduate Studies, with oversight from the Graduate School, to ensure they meet the highest standards of scholarly excellence as evidenced through sustained achievement of criteria developed and adopted by the Council in 2006. As of spring 2009, eight graduate programs have qualified. They include: History and Historical Administration; Communication Disorders and Sciences; College Student Affairs; School Psychology; English; Political Science; and Gerontology.

Ranking and Reputation

For the ninth consecutive year, EIU has been named one of the top Midwestern public universities in its class by U.S. News & World Report. EIU is again ranked 14th among all Midwestern public universities offering a full range of undergraduate degrees and some master's degree programs. The region encompasses Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Buildings and Resources

The University campus is located on 320 acres and consists of 72 buildings, including 12 residence halls and 17 apartment buildings. The University also owns wooded tracts near Charleston which are used for nature study and life science research.
